I have been a fan of Mark Bowden since I read Black Hawk Down, which was one of the most powerful books I've read. I also am fascinated by murderers, for some unknown reason, so it was a good bet that I would like this book, even though the subject is dark. I learned a lot about how criminals and cops lie to effect their cause... this book is mostly transcripts of the conversations between the killer and the cops who convinced him it was in his interest to keep talking (it wasn't!). Along the way, we learn about the depravity of a family that seemed to spawn at least one murderer. It's more satisfying that most books about age-old murders, because the mystery is somewhat "solved," but you are left with the sense of incompleteness because memory and truth are fungible, and it's likely that others were also responsible for the murders of these two girls.
