A nice story, but it's little more than that. Martin's powerful narration is on full display about 16 years before A Game of Thrones, but this story doesn't have much lasting power, despite its subtle and sincere moments. I enjoyed the depiction of a young girl on the outskirts of war, feeling its effects as the battlefield inches closer and closer. Probably could have been expanded, but what was I to expect of an illustrated children's book? A solid read that you won't regret, mostly due to its large print and short page count.
