Goodbye, Darkness
Goodbye, Darkness A Memoir of the Pacific War By Manchester, William Book - 1980

Not only a good book to read for the historical background of the war in the Pacific but the author puts the whole in perspective and context. What did the generation that fought that war think about why they were there and what today's generation thinks about it. I was struck by the idea that the corporations that owned concessions on the islands were very concerned about their share holders and the damage suffered as a result of the fighting and how the US taxpayer picked up the tab for damages so big business and stockholders wouldn't suffer. Things haven't changed much.
