I wanted to like this album more than I did, especially since The E Street Band are back in action. The title track is good as is I'll See You in My Dreams but I was put off by some of the songs' lyrics and I didn't like when Bruce decided to try on a southern U.S. 'country' accent. Great cover and appreciated having the lyrics printed.

A good album overall, but not a great one. Highlights include the title track and "Ghosts" which has a rousing garage-band sound reminiscent of "Rosalita," "Glory Days," and "Mary's Place." Several of the songs ("Last Man Standing," "House of a Thousand Guitars," "I'll See You in my Dreams") are nostalgic ruminations about Springsteen's experiences as a musician and band member, and also about friends and colleagues who have passed on. "Rainmaker" is basically about a scam artist preying on the desperation and ignorance of drought-stricken farmers, although it could also be interpreted as a commentary on the Trump presidency.

Three of the songs ("Janey Needs a Shooter," "If I Was the Priest," and "Song for Orphans") were written in the 1970s, and their style is similar to other songs from that period. "Janey Needs a Shooter" is tedious and melodramatic, and displays none of the passionate rage of the "Darkness on the Edge of Town" period in which it was written. "Song for Orphans" is an even earlier work, and with its drawling harmonica and cryptic, non sequitur lyrics, it sounds like a bad Dylan ripoff. Of these three, "If I Was the Priest" is clearly the best with its creative recasting of Jesus as a sheriff, Mary as a prostitute/saloon keeper, and the Holy Ghost as the emcee of a burlesque show in a wild west setting.

Springsteen seems to be looking back over his life and confronting his own mortality. It's easy to conclude that this could be his last original album now that he is well into his seventies, but considering how prolific he has been throughout his career, there is always hope that he isn't done yet.

Highlight: "Rainmaker."

"Janey Needs a Shooter" is unnecessarily long.
