Racism in the British Empire, robbery and murder, and some of the younger characters maturing are some of the themes of this seventh in the Sir John Fielding series. Robberies by what may or may not be a group of African men complicates life for those who are black, but not involved. A new recruit to the Bow Street Runners does not seem to be as competent as the job requires. Annie and Jeremy take on new rolls and responsibilities. This is a complex mystery revealing human faults and historical inequities. I learned a great deal while being entertained.
