Some parts were funny. I liked the mini zombie goats. I didn't think some of the relationship development was quite as good as it usually is.

I usually love everything Patricia Briggs writes, and this story was really intriguing, but I felt like this novel just wasn't edited enough. There weren't any typos, but there were a lot of unclear interactions and conversations. For example, in one scene, character one calls another character (I'll withhold names and specifics so I don't spoil it) and Mercy narrates that they both knew, though neither said it in the call, what character one's big secret was. Then later, those two characters see each other in person, and character one reveals the big secret and the other says they'll accept it and move on. Then a paragraph or so later character one reveals the secret again and acts like it's the first time, and they have an argument about it. I feel like I missed something somewhere, because they seem to have the same conversation 3 times!

That's just one example, but it happens throughout the book. I also felt like some of Mercy's narration was out of character. I've long come to accept that Patricia Briggs will just throw in random events between books and mention them in the next book like we all already knew they happened, making me wonder if I missed a short story between books or something. But usually, the books themselves are not so confusing internally. Silence Fallen was one of my faves and I had high hopes for this one, but I was mostly confused and distracted by these unclear interactions.

I'll still definitely read the next book she publishes and hope it's back in line with her usual standards, but I can't say I whole-heartedly recommend this one.

Sadly, I was disappointed. It just didn't ring true. It wasn't a bad story, just not a good Mercy Thompson story. At one point I began to question if Ms. Briggs actually wrote it herself or if something happened and someone else had to finish it I have always enjoyed this series and I reread it all the time. Disappointed after the great setup in Burn Bright.
