I liked this movie.. It tells the tale of mark O'Brien, totally paralyzed by polio , dependent upon caregivers and living in SF area in the late 1980's. His quest to be able to NOT die a virgin.

Great acting by Wm. Macy & Helen Hunt.

Rated R for nudity and sex.

Like others have said, this is a touching film about a man, who due to polio, basically lives most of his life in an iron lung. He gets a few hours outside of it per day. He wants to experience sex and so uses the services of a sexual surrogate. The sex is presented in such a mature and respectful way. As a woman and feminist, numbed by the gratuitous female nudity in so much of the drama of our culture, it was such a refreshing change to see a case where the female nudity was respectful and in no way gratuitous. Gives new meaning to the phrase "for adults only." The teenage boys of all ages who get off on the endless rapes and sexposition of Game of Thrones wouldn't find this entertaining.

Good acting all round. William H Macy has a great part as a priest with a sense of humour.

Wow what an incredible movie! Such a touching film that deals with two topics you often don't see together - sex and those with disabilities. Will truly open your eyes to how something one may take for granted is life changing for another.

This is an exceptional film in that it covers an area that doesn't get much visibility. So often people with disabilities get desexualized! It's refreshing to see a film out of the ordinary.

A very good and entertaining adult drama about Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes), a man who has been living in an iron lung since the age of six due to polio. At the age of 38 he confides to his priest (William H. Macy) that he wants to know the touch of a woman so he hires a sex surrogate (Helen Hunt). This film is about a journey showing how the discovery of pleasure can bring out emotional freedom.

Thought it was a good movie. The subject matter and actors rocked but i found it a little slow other than that worth a watch. Learned about Mark O'Brian and his story was a real eye opener.

For adults only – Base on a true story, Helen Hunt (Oscar and Golden Globe noms) plays a sex therapist and one of her clients played by John Hawkes (Golden Globe nom for this role) is a polio victim who spends most of his day in an iron lung. I suspect that this is the only film dealing with this topic. We learn that while sex is important in self-well-being, love is important also. I was amazed to find that I did not recognize Alan Arkin until quite late in the film. See this film if you want to learn more about something I suspect you have no clue.

I always look forward to a movie with Helen Hunt. She never disappoints. She was absolutely believable in the role of the sex therapist in "The Sessions." John Hawkes evoked feelings of compassion for his character Mark O'Brien. It was surprising to me that the iron lung was still used in the 1980's. Beautiful story! Excellent action! Filled with compassion! this is most definitely a two "thumbs-up" movie.

This is an excellent movie from beginning to end and it will definitely be one that sticks with me. It's a thought-provoking, tender-hearted and honest portrayal of the obstacles that have to be overcome in order to realize our full human potential. It is at its core a story about human longing and how this interplays with religion, disability, sexuality, and human relationships. It was witty and sweet and thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend it!!
