On the southern edge of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula lies McAllaster, a beautiful, hardscrabble town that, despite its isolation and wildness, has a magic that captures a certain kind of person and doesn't let go. it's a stop for tourists, but its real, rooted inhabitants are the fruits sellers, lumberjacks, auto mechanics, resturant owners and pub waitresses who make it work. And tow elderly women, Cladys and Arbutus, who've lived there their whole lives, and who used to run the old hotel. It's a town where the landscape is wild and gorgeous, where everyone has a second mortgage or a second job, and a car repair can send someone over the edge, until a friend bends over backward to help. Into this town comes Madeline Stone, who is running away from her old life more than she is consciously running toward anything. But when she arrives to take care of trhe arthritic Arbutus, a friend of her estranged late grandfather, she finds herself pullled into the world of the town, and changed forever. In this one-of-kind place, the people with their friendships and their grudges have long and compicated histories. For generations, the residents have supported and looked out for one another, even when they have peronally disagreed. It's a place where times are tough and debts run deep, but where friendship, community, and compassion run deeper. By opening herself to McAllaster and its residents, Madeline discovers something she never thought she's have-a sense of family and a feeling of belonging. And along the way she falls in love, with the place, with an endering little boy who comes into her care, and with a man who inspires her to live a bigger life.
