This was a Young Readers' Choice Award nominee some years ago, and for good reason. The day the three boys watch Mr DiAngengelo slide down the estuary closer to the sea, Brady wonders: Doesn’t that guy know that there’s a storm brewing? That the currents will be dangerous? He could get in trouble.
His friend J.T. just shrugs, but Brady keeps at it: Isn’t he new to the area? Maybe he really DOESN’T know. We should yell something. Warn him! But Digger shakes his head. He knows the guy and he's a total jerk. Let him get into trouble. Let him sink. It’ll serve him right. But it’s not a grown man, and an experienced kayaker—however much of a jerk he might be—who’s on that red kayak. It’s Mrs. Diangelo and her little boy. And just as Brady predicted they’re swept away…
Isn’t it strange how one simple decision. Just one moment of silence, and one fateful accident can change everyone’s lives forever.
Because it was just an accident? Right? This book will keep you turning the pages until you find out. It's great psychological suspense for middle school readers.
