"David Gemmell tells a tale of very real adventure, the stuff of true epic fantasy."--R. A. Salvatore

Druss, Captain of the Ax, is the stuff of legends. Tales of his battles are told throughout the land, and the stories expand with each telling. But Druss himself grows older, until finally, the warrior turns his back on glory and retreats to his mountain lair. There he awaits his old enemy: death.

But far below, the barbarian Nadir hordes are on the march. All that stands between them and the Drenai people is a mighty six-walled fortress, Dros Delnoch--a great citadel that seems destined to fall. If it does, the Nadir will sweep inexorably across the land, killing all who oppose them.

Reluctantly Druss agrees to come down from his mountaintop to lead this last, hopeless fight. Lost causes mean nothing to him--he has fought in such battles a thousand times in a thousand lands. And he is a hero to inspire a new generation of warriors. He is Druss the Legend.

Thus begins David Gemmell's most celebrated novel--an unrivaled classic of mythic heroism and magnificent adventure. . . .

I borrowed this book as a bit of escapism, and it fit the bill perfectly. The storyline, while thin and arbitrary, was exciting, and the final battle was well worth the build-up. All the characters were the same (a sassy tongue and a troubled past), but their appearances and habits were unique enough to avoid any confusion. This is hardly a Classic, but it was exactly what I was looking for.

I love this book. The story was gripping and well paced, the world was well built with its own stories and history, and most of the characters were well rounded. My favorite thing about this novel was that the Nadir were not presented as evil or necessarily bad, just desperate people who needed the Drenai lands to continue living. I would recommend this novel for anybody who thinks they do not like fantasy.

Fittingly, as it is the first book David Gemmell published (1984), this is the tale that got me hooked on Gemmell's Drenai Saga and led me to read all 11 books in the series and grow to love the larger-than-life and yet down to earth heroes he created. While obviously not his best-written work (as it was his first), nor is it first chronologically in the Saga, it sets the foundation for the other 10 books. Legend is heroic fantasy at its most profound state and Druss is a legend for the ages.

I don't like sci-fi or sci-fan books. But this is well written and has a good enough story line.

A good read though I have to say that I was expecting a bit more considering David Farland has such high praise for Gemmell. Lots of action, gore, some snappy and humorous dialogue but a little disjointed and jerky (things just happen out of nowhere continuously...it's almost write fantasy by number - i.e. cue mental magic attack now - phew, they survived - cue oh-oh, there's a traitor in the midst - phew they survived because it just so happens...etc.). So while its a good debut - it's nowhere near a RuneLords (David Farland) or Dawnthief (James Barclay)
