Darkness, Take My Hand
Book - 1996
Master of new noir Dennis Lehane magnificently evokes the dignity and savagery of working-class Boston in Darkness, Take My Hand, a terrifying tale of redemption.
Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro's latest client is a prominent Boston psychiatrist, running scared from a vengeful Irish mob. The private investigators know about cold-blooded retribution. Born and bred on the mean streets of blue-collar Dorchester, they've seen the darkness that lives in the hearts of the unfortunate.
But an evil for which even they are unprepared is about to strike, as secrets that have long lain dormant erupt, setting off a chain of violent murders that will stain everything - including the truth.
With razor-sharp dialogue and penetrating prose, Darkness, Take My Hand is another superior crime novel from the author of Mystic River; Gone, Baby, Gone; and Shutter Island.

Add a CommentAn exceptional tale - but very dark.
Another amazing title by Lehane. He writes incisively about the darkest aspects of the human condition; with such immediacy you can see the cracks in the linoleum floor in Angie's kitchen as you scootch up on the counter next to Patrick; so poetically about his characters' inner lives that your heart breaks. Plus such a terrifying thriller peopled with such evil that I check the locks on my doors when I'm reading at night.
And if anyone needed further proof that clowns are bad news, they got it here...
Very dark and very predictable. Gruesome and sadistic with cardboard characters. What a waste of time.
(The second book in the Kenzie and Gennaro series)
This book is typical Dennis Lehane: a dark and disturbing but entertaining page turner. I intend to read all of his books.
(eBook) Seems to me that all the characters were psychos with zero social values. Also, hard to accept the plot that the ring of serial killings originated from an event thirty years ago. Nonetheless, a "bloody" fast read. From the same esteemed author of Mystic River, 2001.
Very well written! Very suspenseful and thrilling with great characters and vivid detail. Love the not-so-perfect PI's. Not for the squeamish!
Lehane does not get enough credit for this great series because of the success of Mystic River (great) and Shutter Island (all right). The only downside to any of them is the 'Bubba' Character who seems to run a bit out of reality sometimes. Other times, he's perfectly reasonable.
