His training introduces him to Jim Thorpe, the 1912 winner of two track-and field gold medals - medals later stripped from him. Buffalo also meets Bill Pickett, the black cowboy who invented steer wrestling and who helped create the world's largest Wild West show. Together, these athletes and showmen travel to Mexico, South America, and Europe. As outsiders, they find a common thread that reinforces thir strength and forbearance. Along the way they meet a variety of early twentieth-century clebrities including Theodore Roosevelt, James Naismith, Tim McCoy, early movie greats, and even Jesse Owens, the African-American gold medal winner snubbed by Hitler at the 1936 Olympics.
