As an exMichigander I can explain the storm. Lake Superior is large enough to be a "weather-maker" and does have hurricanes as well as the Edmond Fitzgerald Shipwreck Museum. The water is also cold enough to kill you quickly as happened in an earlier book. Those who live in the Upper Peninsula also refer to the Lower Peninsula as "down below"

Didn't know there were hurricanes in the upper Midwest.

I really loved the earlier LJB books. By now (the 1990s ones) it seems that a ghost writer has taken over, and it is clear by the way he/she describes Qwilleran (kind of sarcastic and cranky) and the kitties (LJB really showed her love of cats by her descriptions of their behaviour).
