After a slow start I thoroughly enjoyed this novel based on true events taking place in Canada in the 1950s. At the age of 16, Maggie is forced to give up her baby. Years pass and orphanages are turned into mental institutions so that they qualify for more government funding. Meanwhile, Maggie has begun to search for the baby she wasn't allowed to raise and faces one obstacle after another when she is denied information about her child time and time again. After a slow start I thoroughly enjoyed this novel based on true events taking place in Canada in the 1950s. I needed something light to read after finishing a dark non-fiction book and this was just the thing. It's a good story (Regency romance) with likable characters who show courage and heart.

This is the fist of Ruth Ware's books that I have read and I enjoyed it. It was a quick read. Some of it was predictable, some of it not. It's a perfect mystery for a dark, stormy night!

I enjoyed this mix of the author telling her own story as well as relating those of some of her patients. There is humor, honesty, growth, and sometimes resistance to growth throughout the telling of these experiences. What a great read! Loveday has experienced her share of trauma, and her journey involves a gradual emergence from the safety of the cocoon she has carefully constructed. We are given hope that she will be able to allow other people back into her life and to truly know her someday. Her quirky relationship with her boss, her poetry and new relationship are all things that push her beyond her comfort zone. Julia Whelan is an award winning narrator and does a phenomenal job of bringing Kristin Hannah's book to life.
